The Value Breakdown

If you value Membership Rewards points at around 1.5 cents each (a common baseline), 1,000 points are worth roughly $15. That's a solid return on $40, especially if your purchase total is close to that amount. If you're spending much more, the effective return drops, but it's still a nice bonus.

The $5 back option is straightforward cash back, which might appeal if you prefer simplicity over points. Either way, it's free money for purchases you were likely already going to make.

Stacking with Prime Day

Amazon's Prime Day events are happening on October 6 and 7, so if you're planning to shop, this offer could stack nicely with already-discounted prices. Just remember to enroll your card before you check out. If you have multiple Amex cards, you might find the offer on more than one, but you can only use it on the card you enroll.
